On the way home from Liverpool, we visited Crosby Beach. It is a special (daresay I say even romantic…) place for Mum and Dad… easy tiger!
At Crosby Beach, you’ll find ‘Another Place’ by Sir Antony Gormley. It is a piece of modern and spectacular sculpture which consists of 100 cast-iron, life-size figures, modelled on the artist’s own naked body, facing towards the sea, staring at the horizon in silent expectation. The figures spread out along three kilometres of the foreshore, stretching almost one kilometre out to sea. Each figure is 189 centimetres (6 ft 2 in) tall and weighs around 650 kilograms (1,430 lb).
The work proved controversial due to the naked statues but has increased tourism to the beach. Having previously been seen in Cuxhaven in Germany, Stavanger in Norway and De Panne in Belgium, ‘Another Place’ was made a permanent feature at Crosby Beach in 2007. If you’re in Liverpool or the surrounding area, this is definitely something to go and see and a marvellous piece of art to be enjoyed by everyone. It’s something you can go back to again and again and feel differently depending on the weather or how far the tide it out. It’s also a great photo opportunity – see below 🙂
Crosby Beach is a great place to stretch your legs but please see this very important Bryn De Bear safety announcement. This is a non-bathing beach with areas of soft sand and mud and a risk of changing tides. Visitors should stay within 50 metres of the promenade at all tides and not attempt to walk out to the furthest figures. Mum did not listen to this of course and Dad still bought her an ice cream with raspberry sauce even though she was a very naughty human and ignored these instructions!
